It was July 2007.

And Andy Krey, having been in ministry among the “people of the sea” since 1969, founded Maritime Bethel at Savannah (MBS). Since that time in 2007, until he retired in March 2020, Andy has been the Chaplain and Executive Director of MBS. In March of 2020 John Houchens took over as Executive Director and together with several new Board Members and key advisors, began building on the wonderful ministry that Andy founded.

The Ports of Savannah, and the 78,000 seafarers that call on it each year, present a unique opportunity to share the love and compassion of Jesus. The life of a typical seafarer has many challenges. Levels of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations are significantly higher than the population at large and in similar industries (like oil & gas). Months away from home, contracts that are often extended, difficulty in getting wages, and a difficult work environment all contribute to a need for Maritime Bethel Savannah.
